Diana Ross, is an American singer and actress. Known as the "Queen of Motown Records," she was the lead singer of the Supremes, Motown's most successful act of the 1960s and one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. The group remains the highest-charting female group in history, with 12 number-one singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. After leaving the Supremes in 1970, Ross launched a solo career with her self-titled debut album.
She went on to release 26 studio albums, including Touch Me in the Morning (1973), Diana (1980), and Swept Away (1984). Several of her singles, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Upside Down," and "Endless Love," topped the Billboard Hot 100, making her the most successful female solo act in the U.S. at the time. She continued to achieve global success into the 1980s and 1990s with hits such as "I'm Coming Out" and "When You Tell Me That You Love Me." Ross also gained recognition as an actress, earning an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues (1972). She starred in Mahogany (1975) and The Wiz (1978) and later appeared in television films like Out of Darkness (1994) and Double Platinum (1999). In 1976, Billboard named her the "Female Entertainer of the Century."
She has sold over 100 million records worldwide and remains the only female artist to achieve number-one singles as a solo artist, part of a duet, a trio member, and in an ensemble. In 1988, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Supremes and is among the few performers with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Throughout her career, Ross has received numerous honors, including a Special Tony Award, the Kennedy Center Honors, two Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
